SUPERMARKET staff morphed into professional pedal pushers over the weekend as they fundraised for charity.

The staff from the Tesco Extra store off Marcham Road, Abingdon, cycled 75 miles on both Friday and Saturday, culminating in a 150 mile challenge. Senior manager Chris Gilleard said: “It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, particularly because I didn’t prepare or train for it.

“The idea that I was raising money for Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation was what kept me going through those painful few hours.

“Although we haven’t found out how much has been raised yet, I’m confident that it’s going to be a significant amount.”

The group cycled through Steventon, Culham, Chiselhampton, Kennington, Radley and Abingdon on their trip.

Mr Gilleard said: “The Oxfordshire locals were so supportive.

“Hundreds of drivers beeped their horns or cheered us on from their cars, which really motivated us to carry on going.”
