Trevor Joyce has appeared in court charged with the murder of 61-year-old Justin Skrebowski in Poundland in Abingdon.

The 36-year-old of Franklyn Close, Abingdon, appeared at Banbury Magistrates' Court this morning.

Speaking only to confirm his name, Joyce was wearing a grey-coloured hoody, jeans and a purple polo shirt and is due to appear at Oxford Crown Court on Friday. He was remanded in custody.

Thames Valley Police yesterday named 61-year-old Justin Skrebowski as the victim in a fatal stabbing at the Bury Street store, which happened at about 11.20am on Monday.

Mr Skrebowski from Oxford is believed to have been shopping in Poundland at the time of the attack.

He has not yet been formally identified but his next of kin had been informed.

Neighbours who knew Mr Skrebowski, who lived in Sunnymead, spoke of their “shock” and “heartbreak” at his death.

One woman, who lived next door to him for eight years, said: “He moved to Oxford with his Polish dad who was in the RAF. He has got little twins, they are only three years old. He worked in a shop in Portobello Road in London, framing old pictures.

"He was a very helpful and peaceful neighbour, I’m really heartbroken. My husband will be really upset, they used to do things together. They are a very nice family, I just really feel for his wife and children.”

Another, who burst into tears when she heard the news, said: “He was a nice neighbour, they’ve really worked hard on their house. He was very polite and kind, I can’t believe it. They just keep themselves to themselves, a really nice family. It’s shocking.”

A post mortem examination carried out by a Home Office pathologist showed that he had died from knife injuries.

Officers were called to the Bury Street precinct on Monday to reports of a stabbing.

A second man, 80, also suffered a minor hand injury during the attack.
