A BAND of big-hearted bikers will cheer up sick children in memory of a teenage cancer victim who "will never be forgotten".

Riders from the Oxford Harley Chapter will turn out for their annual toy run tomorrow, roaring from the dealership near Abingdon to Oxford Children's Hospital.

They will deliver presents to the children in tribute to 15-year-old Jake Spicer, from Blackbird Leys, who died from bone cancer.

Chapter director Andy Spindlow, 60, helps to organise the Jake Spicer Memorial Run.

He said: "After we had been doing it for a few years Jake was taken with Harley-Davidson.

"Before he died he was so hooked and was talking to chapters round the world - he was quite remarkable.

"He used to come to the chapter and everyone made a fuss of him, he would tell us about the people he'd been talking to. It was a great shame when he died."

Jake, known as 'OX4 Soldier' to his friends, was diagnosed with bone cancer at nine-years-old and lost his battle in 2009.

A year later the riders, who have been running the event for 20 years, decided to rename it after Jake who they had made an honorary member.

Mr Spindlow hoped to beat last year's rider tally of 150 people.

He said: "We get lots of people on the side of the road taking photos, we are always a welcome sight."

The toys are donated by riders or their families and friends, and get marked with a special yellow sticker as a symbol of the Harley-Davidson crew.

Mr Spindlow added: "A couple of weeks ago I was at the garage and the mechanic saw the sticker on my tax disc.

"His boy had been ill and he was very grateful for a toy at the hospital."

Jake's family will attend the toy run, remembering the times it distracted him from his chemotherapy.

Mum Lesley Spicer, 51, described the bikers' annual tribute as "amazing".

She said: "It's nice to keep Jake's memory alive with something he was interested in.

"Knowing that the bikers do what they do brings it all back, what they did for him.

"It's a big thing how much those 'grizzly bikers' care."

She will be joined on Sunday by Jake's dad Michael Spicer, 54, his 11-year-old sister Maddison and his niece Kayla, five, who he never got to meet.

His older brothers Aaron, 27, and Ryan, 24, have also attended in previous years.

Mrs Spicer, who lives in Greater Leys, said: "We commemorate his birthday and passing every year.

"My husband takes me on a walk to Wolvercote Cemetery and we do a makeover on his grave for him.

"People say time is a healer but you never forget - he is still a part of our lives."

Anyone who wishes to catch the bikers can see them off at 11am, as they ride in convoy from the Harley-Davidson dealership in Wootton Road.
