PEOPLE in Abingdon had their first chance to see plans for 900 new homes to the north of the town.

Developer CEG unveiled the proposals at a public exhibition attended by hundreds in Trinity Church, Conduit Road, on Saturday.

It is proposing to build the homes on protected Green Belt land between Dunmore Road and the A34, as well as on land north of Twelve Acre Drive.

The development would be built in four stages over a period of about 10 years, starting in 2018.

Proposals currently include a new primary school, a "local centre" with cafes, shops and community facilities, football pitches, a multi-use sports area and a pavilion.

There would also be children's play areas, "wildlife corridors", pedestrian and cycle routes and improvements to public transport links.

Retired Bruce Turner, of Lovelace Close, said: "They have proposed a primary school, but where is the comprehensive school? And although houses need to be built, but frankly this is Green Belt land and the point of that is to stop this kind of thing."

But new dad Imran Qureshi, a software tester, said: "The extra traffic this could cause would be the biggest concern for me, but I am otherwise very supportive."

About 400 people went along to the church hall exhibition, between 11am and 4pm, with another planned tomorrow at Tilsley Park, Dunmore Road, from 5pm to 8pm.
