FLASHING lights and street food filled a town centre at a historical fun fair.

Children in Abingdon hopped onto rides and rummaged for prizes at the annual Michaelmas Fair, which rolled out along Market Place and Ock Street on Sunday.

Nursery worker Kelly Connolly, 28, took along her sons Jacob Abraham, four, and Oscar Abraham, two, to carry on the family tradition.

She said: “I have lived here all my life so grew up with it. Jacob goes every year and he loves it. He really likes all the lights and the music.

“It’s a bit of fun and there has never been any trouble, everyone is happy.”

St Nicolas Primary School pupil Jacob, who lives with his mum off Ock Street, managed to hook himself a mini car yesterday to take home.

The fair, which also runs today from midday until 11pm, dates back to the 14th century when it was used to hire agricultural workers.

It claims to be the longest street fair in Europe.
