A GRADE II listed pub has been given a six-figure makeover.

The transformation is designed to bring Abingdon's The White Horse in to line with modern customers' tastes.

Changes include a lighter colour scheme, with tiled walls, new furniture and flooring, as well as a redecorated outdoor area and entrance.

The bar has also been completely refurbished, with the introduction Sky and BT TV, as well as an extended selection of local and national ales, plus world beers.

The White Horse dates back to 1845 and was originally owned by the Borough of Abingdon the White Horse when the tenant George Turb was a local merchant and beer retailer.

It was purchased 10 years later by a local brewer named John Beesley before being owned by the Morland family for the next hundred years.

In 1999 brewery and pub chain Greene King took over the pub. eventually extending the building to provide dining facilities and also regularly hosting live music.

The White Horse is now one of just two public houses left on Ock Street.

The street, which leads in to the town centre, was once lined with pubs but now just The White Horse and Brewery Tap remain.

Alex Duxbury Watkinson recently took over as general manager at the pub, which has some sections dating back to the eighteenth century.

He said: “The White Horse is at the heart of the Abingdon community, so we are excited to be able to offer a place where locals can enjoy a drink or meal in enhanced surroundings.

“The opening was a real success, with great feedback from guests on the new interior and delicious menu.

"We look forward to welcoming more guests in the coming weeks.”

The pub was closed for two weeks while the work was completed, reopening to customers on January 25.

As part of the revamp a new menu has also been launched, featuring a range of seasonal dishes, including lamb shoulder, cod with chorizo and chickpea stew and a selection of award winning pies including chicken and roasted woodland mushroom, as well as a selection of burgers and desserts.
