FAMILIES had the chance to have fun in the sun at the Abingdon Armed Forces open day, staged at Dalton Barracks at the weekend.

On Saturday, both young and old were kept highly entertained at the event organised by Army personnel, the Vale of White Horse District Council and Abingdon Town Council, on the base’s sports field in Shippon.

Thrills were provided by the Royal Logistic Corps’ motorcycle display team and the Silver Stars freefall parachutists.

There was also military music from the 7 Rifles band and the Welsh Transport Regiment’s Corps of Drums.

Visitors enjoyed fairground attractions, paintballing, bouncy castles and other displays.

Admission to the event was free, but visitors had the chance to make donations to two military charities, the Army Benevolent Fund and Help for Heroes.

Corporal Jay Tramell, of the Silver Stars, swooped on to the field, right, flying the Armed Forces Day flag, which had been flown from the top of County Hall in Abingdon to mark Armed Forces Day, After touching down, he presented it to local veteran and holder of the Distinguished Flying Medal, Stan Bradford, to bring the event to a close.
