General Election: Harris attacks leaflet 'abuse'

Evan Harris Evan Harris

An Anglican priest’s leaflet campaign about Oxford West and Abingdon candidate Evan Harris has been condemned by the politician as an ‘inaccurate personal attack’.

About 10,000 leaflets have been distributed which make claims about Dr Harris’s stance on abortion and euthanasia and his views on religion.

Tonight, Dr Harris, Liberal Democrat MP for the area since 1997, said the material was based on a distorted view of his voting record and contained personal abuse.

He spoke out as it emerged the leaflet’s author, Lynda Rose, had complained to police after receiving abusive phone calls following the distribution of the A4 sheets.

The leaflet claims Dr Harris promotes liberalising the law on abortion and embryo research and claims he is ‘one of the most out-spoken secularists in Parliament’.

The leaflet also claims he has been reported as having the nickname ‘Dr Death’ in Westminster.

Dr Harris said: “It is a pity that, instead of putting up a candidate to contest the election, an anonymous group, using money from no one knows where, is distributing an inaccurate personal attack leaflet in this constituency for the first time ever.

“It is offensive and I would say profoundly unchristian to use the term Dr Death – associated with Nazi murderer Joseph Mengele or mass-murderer Harold Shipman – to describe any politician.”

Dr Harris refuted claims made on the leaflets concerning his stance on abortion and euthanasia.

He said: “I am proud of my record of speaking out on medical ethical issues and of course no candidate will agree with everyone on some of these divisive issues but I have always been prepared to debate the issue with any group.”

Rev Rose, who is not a parish-based priest, says she leads a group of residents who are concerned by the Dr Harris’s views on the issues.

She said the leaflet was not produced on behalf of a formal or political group.

She said: “It is completely independent, entirely on the part of concerned residents. It is a purely factual leaflet and it has been extensively checked out. It’s letting people have the full facts.”

She said reaction to the material had been mixed and she had received threatening phone calls that she reported to the police.

She said: “When people start screaming abuse at you and threaten to put things through your letterbox it is very upsetting.

“A few people have been very pleased. They have said thank you for spelling it out.”

“When people start screaming abuse at you and threaten to put things through your letterbox it is very upsetting"
Pretty much what YOU did in a more literal form. And you're surprised you got a negative response? I lined my guineapig hutch with my copy without reading it.

Thank you 'Rev' (ha!) Jones, I was in 2 minds who to vote for but when I saw what Harris stood for, I see I must vote for him and against your nasty homophobic anti-science anti-women views

I don't care what religion the MPS are, or what they do for a living, I even don't care which Party they belong to. He is my 'local' MP, I vote for those who do their best for Abingdon. (or who has helped my family).

I wish Lib-Dems would stop posting begging letters and brochures which don't feature articles for what they will do for Abingdon, but appear to be what the other parties would do. If elected.

Science, technology, and engineering are very important to this country as we come out of recession. Dr Harris is recognised as one of the main spokesmen for the scientific community in parliament. The area round Abingdon has many working scientists and important scientific research institutes. In looking after Science he is doing a huge amount for Abingdon and the area - jobwise and economically.

I'd love to see this document, if it is as revealing as it's purported to be, then one has to ask the question "at what point does science come before ethics"? and "who decides"?
And of course shouldn't Dr Harris explain, in detail, his veiws and opinions on such delecate subjects so the electorate has the full picture on what their MP stands for?

If I still had mine I'd sned it to you Steve. It was entitled "Dr Death", which was nice, so I didn't read any further. If you saw it, I'm sure you be condemning it like those of us who have seen it. Credit for what you do for Abingdon, but be careful you don't appear to take every article on Evan Harris as a chance to criticise him. Just saying. Peace out.

Dr Harris has always been 100% open about his views on controvesrsial issues. He has distributed reports around the constituency every year featuring his position on many of them.

His record in Parliament, as with all MPs, is available on the Hansard website.

These leaflets have a host of inaccuracies in them which misrepresent his position.

Just one example: Dr harris has never campaigned for faith schools to be closed, yet the leaflets say he has.
