ABINGDON youngsters held their own Olympics complete with an impressive opening ceremony.

Nearly 600 pupils from four schools in the town took part in the sports day event on the Manor Preparatory School’s sports field on Wednesday.

The day kicked off with an opening ceremony featuring a procession with children displaying flags from some 30 different countries.

Year Five and Six pupils from the Manor School were joined by children at Rush Common, Long Furlong and Caldecott School to take part in sprint relays, accuracy throws, obstacle races, football shoot-outs and standing long-jumps.

Pupils at Radley Primary School have also been getting into the Olympic mood with a London 2012 themed sports day last month.

Manor School headteacher Piers Heyworth: “I am sure that it has geared our children up for the arrival of the Olympic torch in Abingdon on Tuesday and indeed for the Olympics themselves.”

Manor School pupil Anna Wray, 10, said: “I loved the fact that all the different schools could mix together to play sport. All the flags were really cool and the procession was brilliant.”
