A NEW smartphone app will help remind residents in southern Oxfordshire when they need to put their bins out.

The app, which is called Binfo, is now available on Apple’s App Store and the Google Android Play Store.

The service tells residents in South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse when their next collection is due, and which type of collection it is — reycling or rubbish for landfill.

And the app will automatically not-ify householders when the timetable is changed due to Bank Holidays or bad weather.

The councils currently run a text message notification service to advise residents about waste collection changes but there is a cost, while the new app is free.

Vale of White Horse District Council leader Matthew Barber said: “I think we are one of the first councils in the country to offer this service and this follows us being a top performer when it comes to recycling.

“The app is free to customers and cost about £5,000 to develop.

“We have also got a deal with the software developer so that we can earn some money if other councils take it up."

Mr Barber, pictured, added that as the ‘app platform’ expanded, the councils would consider using them to keep residents informed on other services.
