ROLLING road closures are to be put in place as the world’s top cyclists race through Oxfordshire tomorrow.

Cyclists including Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish are due to speed through close to Wantage, Didcot and Wallingford as the Tour of Britain comes to the county.

Stage Six of the race will see about 120 riders take on a 203km route which starts in Bath and finishes in Hemel Hempstead.

The stage includes a 60km stretch in Oxfordshire – from Wantage to Chinnor – with a climb up Chinnor Hill.

The race is expected to reach Wantage shortly before 1pm where it will travel through Ormond Road, Charlton Road and on to Reading Road.

The Tour will then move through to Harwell, Upton and Blewbury before reaching Cholsey and Crowmarsh Gifford.

It is expected to reach Christmas Common near Watlington for about 2pm.

Tour of Britain spokesman Peter Hodges said: “The race uses rolling road closures, so within Oxfordshire there’ll only be rolling road closures.

“These come in about 10-15mins ahead of the first rider and are lifted again as soon as the race has passed through, so around 20-30mins of closure, maximum. The race is escorted by a combination of police and civilian escort motorcycles, plus a police command vehicle.”
