Delays on trains between Reading and Didcot Parkway are expected to continue until 3.30pm after a lorry hit a bridge in Reading earlier today.

The lines reopened at about 12.45pm, about an hour after the lorry got stuck under one of the bridges in Cow Lane, Reading.

National Rail initially said delays were expected until 2pm but have now said services are unlikely to return to normal until 3.30pm.

Emergency services were sent to the scene and a structural engineer was assigned to assess the bridge.

Once safety checks were performed the all-clear was given for trains to begin running again.

First Great western said services between Reading and Didcot Parkway are still delayed by about 40 minutes.

The Cow Lane bridges have been a major part of the multimillion-pound improvements in Reading because the old narrow structures were frequently being hit by vehicles.
