A GROUP of South Oxfordshire mums put on a public display of breastfeeding to show Nigel Farage what it’s all about.

A breastfeeding support group was annoyed by Farage’s comments that women should perhaps ‘sit in the corner’ and not be ‘ostentatious’ while feeding their infant.

The group gathered for their weekly meeting and decided to get into the Christmas spirit while taking a stand against the UKIP leader.

Camilla Preece, 31, helped to organise the event. The mum-of-one, who has another on the way, said: “It started out as a bit of Christmas fun and then Mr Farage made his silly comments and we thought ‘let’s be as ostentatious as possible’. It was just a bit of a laugh really.

“There’s an awful lot of politics in parenting, parents should just be allowed to get on with parenting as they see fit. We are allowed to feed our babies wherever anyone else is allowed to eat.”

Mother-of-two Louise Hurford, 35, from Wallingford joined in yesterday to support the cause.

She said: “I’ve never seen ostentatious breastfeeding, the idea is hilarious. It was just a bit a fun, I wore a bit of a showy top.

“The cafe is an amazing place that supports new mums to begin breastfeeding.

“You don’t see anything anyway, why should we have to go elsewhere. We are nurturing a child.”

Nigel Farage said mums should 'sit in the corner' when breastfeeding

Suzanne Evans, deputy leader of UKIP speaking on behalf of Mr Farage, said: “There is no need to show Nigel Farage what breastfeeding is all about; he’s had four children of his own.

“He said on his radio show that he has no problem with mothers breastfeeding in public and did not say women ‘should’ breastfeed in a corner. He has since stressed that he fully supports breastfeeding and encourages all mums who are able, to do so.”

She added: “These women are wasting their time as they are preaching to the converted. Personally, I would like to add that I think it is a great shame they are politicising such a natural and often wonderful experience.”

The group meets at Ridgeway Community Church in Wallingford, every Thursday betwen noon and 2pm.
