THE A34 northbound  between Marcham and Milton re-opened this evening after the road was closed when a lorry crashed into a ditch last night.

Thames Valley Police spokeswoman Francine Rodrigues said the crash happend at about 11.10pm last night and was a “damage only” incident, involving a lorry and a roadworks truck.

The lorry left the carriageway. The Highways Agency said a turntable crane was used to get the lorry back onto the road.

One lane re-opened at 8.30pm and the second at about 9.40pm.

Spokesman Daniel Wood earlier said recovery could take up to four hours because some trees had “impaled” the lorry when it crashed.

He said: “It has transpired that when the lorry came off the road it also went into some trees.

“We are having to remove them as we recover it, so the work might run into peak hours.

“Staff on scene have the equipment they need to remove obstacles however, so it is possible we will have the road reopened by early evening.”

South Central Ambulance said paramedics had not been called to the scene.

Police directed northbound drivers off the Milton Interchange and via Steventon.

Force spokeswoman Ms Rodrigues earlier said: “Police are enforcing a diversion, but the decision to reopen the road will be made by the Highways Agency.

“It is suggested that drivers avoid the junction for the rest of the morning, because at the moment we cannot give a definite time for reopening.”
