AN AUTHENTIC industrial air raid shelter used during the Second World War came to life over the weekend.

Didcot Railway Centre invited families to experience how it felt being tucked inside its shelter when a siren sounded.

The Great Western Society education team enlightened visitors about life during the war, as part of its events marking the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Skye Newman travelled with her family from their Northampton home to visit the centre.

The eight-year-old said: “The shelter was a little bit scary. We heard the siren as well. I had fun.”

Frank Dumbleton, of the centre’s marketing team, said: “Didcot was quite an important railway junction. It was a prime target for bombing.

“It needed somewhere for the staff to shelter if there was an alert. It’s quite spooky because it’s very dark.

“It’s probably pretty unique. Original shelters are few and far between.”
