ON THE day when Jayden Parkinson would have celebrated her 19th birthday, family and friends will gather to celebrate her life and raise money in her name.

Mum Sam Shrewsbury said she hoped tomorrow’s event in memory of her murdered daughter, the second to be held, will become an annual fixture in Didcot.

Miss Shrewsbury, 48, wants to link up with other charities in the future to raise funds for domestic abuse charity Jayden’s Gift, which was set up to give extra support to victims.

Jayden was killed by her ex-boyfriend Ben Blakeley in a field south of Didcot in December 2013 when she was 17 years old. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Jayden’s Gift is expected to receive its registered charity status in the coming months.

Tomorrow’s event at the Wheatsheaf pub will run from midday until late and will feature live music, a barbecue a prize draw and hair-braiding.

Miss Shrewsbury said: “We would like to do this every year for the town of Didcot, but we will at some point do something in Oxford.

“Hopefully we might get together with some other charities supporting not just domestic violence issues but all the things that come after that and fundraise together.

“Because tomorrow will be her 19th birthday I am going down to visit her grave in the morning. It is a really weird feeling because I cannot wish her a happy birthday.

“Then it will be back to Didcot for the event at the Wheatsheaf.”

As with last year’s event, there will be a minute’s silence at 5.50pm to mark the exact moment Jayden was born in 1996.

Miss Shrewsbury said: “Every day drags but the years are getting quicker.

“It is nearly Christmas time again and that will be two years since Jayden was killed.

“I don’t leave the house, I’ve become a bit agoraphobic.

“Going to these sort of events, everybody sees a different side to me.

“It gives me hope that people turn up and are still giving that support two years on. Hopefully the event will be a little bit more organised this year.”

There is no entry fee but people have been asked to donate as much as they are able to.

One of the trustees of Jayden’s Gift has donated a half-hour flying lesson, which will be first prize in the raffle.

Miss Shrewsbury said: “People should come along and celebrate Jayden and the town.

“We had a lot of support from the people of Didcot so this event will always be a thank you to them as well.

“I do not think Jayden knew she was loved as much as she really was.

“She would be amazed that she made such an impact.”
