DAREDEVILS waded through heaps of mud and battled obstacles to raise cash for the county's disabled.

Brave fundraisers poured into Cornbury Park, near Charlbury, for the gruelling Monster Race

Hundreds crossed the finished line on Saturday, proudly waving their chunky "I beat the monster" medals around the wooded grounds.

The event raised cash for Charlbury-based charity Special Effect, which uses video games and technology to enhance the lives of disabled people.

Contestants chose to tackle the 5k course, with many deciding to double the distance and brave the route twice.

Daring fundraisers overcame obstacles, crawled under barbed wire crawl, swung across monkey bars and scaled wooden fences.

They also tried their luck at paddling through the mud pit 'bog of stench' and dunked their bodies into pools of water.

People travelled from all across the country to take part in the Oxfordshire fundraiser, with leader of Vale of White Horse District Council Matthew Barber giving it a go.

Special Effect ambassador Jamie Thorp smashed his fundraising target of £500 and raised more than £1190 for the charity.

Mums from Ladygrove Primary School in Didcot took part including Bex De Croos, Bee Barber, Claire Owen, Gemma Webb and Urs Brooks.

Lucy Larkman, of Oxford University's zoology department, tweeted: "@TheMonsterRace survived! 13k of thick mud, steep hills and the coldest water! #socold."
