MANY people do their bit for charity by taking part in a half-marathon or collecting loose change outside shops.

But Wallingford School pupil Georgia Artene, 16, sacrificed her locks to raise money for Cancer Research after being inspired by a cousin who twice beat the disease.

The schoolgirl raised more than £500 in sponsorship for the head-shaving yesterday, the latest in a line of fundraising efforts.

She said: “It was great, it went really well.

“I have done a few charity runs before but this is the first time I have shaved my head. My cousin lost hers when she was battling cancer and that inspired me to do it.

“By doing it I am hoping to promote the idea that it is simply okay to be bald, so that people realise having no hair is not a negative thing. No-one should turn down treatment in the fear that they will eventually turn bald.”
