An overturned lorry blocked lanes along the M40 today, causing the motorway to grind to a standstill.

Sprawling across the southbound and northbound carriageway between Junction 6 and 7, a lorry overturned, went into the central reservation and fuel spilled out onto the motorway.

The scene has now been cleared but the third lane remains closed while repairs to the central reservation take place.

Queues remain but they are easing.

Speaking eariler today, Connie Primer, a spokeswoman for Thames Valley Police, said the driver of the lorry has been injured.

She said: "One person has been injured which we believe is the driver.

"We are still there at the scene now but we have got two lanes running Northbound.

"We are just waiting to recover the lorry."

Police were called to the scene at 12.30pm today.

South Central Ambulance Service spokesman David Gallagher said they were called at 12.29pm incident.

He added: "The driver had got out of the lorry and had a minor ankle injury.

"We sent an ambulance and an officer to the seen and the man was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital."

Two lanes are still closed and drivers are being warned of three to four hour delays.

Police have advised it will take four hours to clear the wreckage.

The Oxford Bus company has warned its users there may be cancellations to some of its services following the accident

Junction 9 southbound is now getting busy as queuing traffic is coming off the M40 to avoid the standstill which starts at Junction 8.

One driver said in the last two and a half hours she has only moved three miles.
