MILITARY personnel who travelled to the Caribbean to help after the devastation of two hurricanes have been recognised for their bravery.

RAF Benson air crew who took part in Operation RUMAN after hurricanes Irma and Maria in autumn were presented with a Special Recognition Award by Prime Minister Theresa May at The Sun Military Awards ceremony on Wednesday night in London.

Cpl Vicki Keats and duty driver L/Cpl Lindsay Clarke were also nominated in the ‘Hero at Home’ category.

They were travelling home to RAF Benson from Gatwick Airport when they were flagged down by a pedestrian who had witnessed a car crash.

Arriving at the scene, they saw that the unconscious driver was still trapped in a smoking vehicle.

Watched by several onlookers as the situation become more dangerous by the minute, the corporals worked together to pull the man to safety just minutes before the vehicle erupted into a ball of flames.

Cpl Keats said: “I’d like to think that anyone would do what we did.

"We were just lucky that we were there on time to help.”
