SEVERAL fire extinguishers, old road signs, a toy gun and a knife were among the treasures discovered when volunteers spent three hours picking up litter in their town.

The team of 70 adults and children collected 125 bin bags full of rubbish despite the snow and freezing temperatures in Wallingford last Saturday morning – March 17.

The trash team, which included firefighters, Guides and Scouts, was organised by civic group Wallingford 1155, and the town’s comrades club served up free soup and rolls afterwards.

Organiser Mark Brett said: “Many thanks to all those volunteers who turned up to litter pick Wallingford in the freezing cold and snowing conditions.

“Bins falling over, the wind, and accidents caused some of this rubbish, although some could have been deliberate and caused by carelessness by a minority. Wallingford 1155 and our community are all doing their bit to be responsible for the waste produced.”
