MORE than 1,000 people have signed a petition calling for some 30 mature pine trees not to be cut down.

Susan Robson of Wallingford started the campaign urging South Oxfordshire District Council not to let the felling happen.

St Edwards Homes wants to cut down 27 semi-mature black pine trees as well as another group of trees and a portion of hedgerow on Wallingford Bypass as part of its plans to build a 555-home estate on land known as 'Site B'.

The tree felling is not part of the main estate but to allow a construction access road to be built.

Ms Robson said: "It is so sad that 20 years growth could be destroyed in a day."

She added: "I am still really upset at the loss of the trees that have been felled already.

"I have watched them grow over the past 20 years to create a beautiful habitat for wildlife and barrier to noise pollution, particularly lovely in Autumn and Spring. "
