SIXTH formers turned journalists have teamed up to create a new school magazine — and they want members of the local community to read it too.
Students from Wallingford School started The Wall, a glossy publication packed with articles on current affairs, features and reviews.
The first issue was published just before Christmas and the second is expected to hit the streets next month, but this time the editorial team wants everyone in the town to read their work.
Editor Vicky Goodall, 16, said: “We want to make it as accessible to as many people as possible, so they can see what Wallingford School is about. Sometimes we are not given as much credit as I think we deserve.
“We have lots of students and lots have the ability to write. All the articles are so different and it shows how diverse the school is.”
The brainchild of student Lottie Gross, now 17, who was interested in journalism, the publication has been well received by pupils, teachers and members of the community already.
Charlie Hannigan, 16, in charge of publicity, said: “We are trying to get the magazine out to local people by putting it in local shops and waiting rooms, so lots of people have a chance to look at it.
“There is something for everyone in there. I think it looks wonderful and it’s very well designed. We haven’t had anything negative said about it and our headteacher has been really supportive.”
Revenue from advertising and a donation from the school has helped fund the magazine so far, but the ten-strong production team is looking for more firms to get on board.
They hope to boost the circulation figures to well over 1,000 when the next edition comes out.
The magazine was originally to be called The Wallingford School Magazine, but that got shortened to The Wall.
Headteacher Wyll Willis said: “The students were keen to take The Wall home and read it, which is a sure sign that the journalists know what they are doing. It is the best I have seen from any school.
“We are also grateful to the businesses that sponsored it. They could not have known how good it was going to be, but backed the youngsters anyway.”
