VILLAGERS have told the Government that an international airport on their doorstep would “wreck the quality of life... beyond imagining”.

Now residents will find out whether the Government considers the plan a serious contender in December.

Bristol architects firm Pleiade Associates submitted the plans for a four-runway international airport south of Abingdon earlier this year.

The £18.2bn plan, which would have capacity for 125m passengers, is one of the proposals submitted to the Government’s Airports Commission looking at the future of the UK’s airports.

Drayton, south of Abingdon, is the only village in the area which formally responded to the plan before the deadline last Friday.

In a formal response to the commission, councillors said: “Anyone who has viewed the plans will not be surprised to learn that Drayton is utterly opposed to the construction of an airport on this site.

“However, we cannot ignore proposals which, if they do not actually jeopardise the physical existence of this village (as for example the village of Sipson is threatened by the possible building of a third runway at Heathrow), would certainly wreck the quality of life in Drayton beyond imagining.
