THERE was tea and triumph as a coffee morning group found a new home after they lost their home at the very charity they supported.

But they won’t be raising money for the Red Cross any more.

The weekly Tuesday morning meet-up was held in a back room at Wantage’s Red Cross shop for 30 years and raised money for the charity. But in April the charity’s head office told the group the room was to be converted into an extension to the shop.

Evelyn Dance, 90, helped found the Wantage Red Cross branch and raised the funds to build the shop.

After the story appeared in the Oxford Mail, several establishments got in touch to offer their venues. Now they meet at the nearby Bay Tree Café each Tuesday morning. But Mrs Dance said they would not be raising money for the Red Cross.

She said: “We all decided, if they kick us out – that’s it.”

British Red Cross manager Sarah Guthrie said: “Their support has been incredible and we would like to thank them for everything they’ve done.”

“We wish them lots of success with any ongoing fundraising activities.”
