THOUSANDS of people flocked to Wantage Market Place for this year's fundraising carnival.

Youngsters were invited to dress in superhero costumes for the town centre parade.

Organiser Ray Collins, manager of Peter Ledbury's electricals, said the carnival on Sunday was an "amazing day".

He added: "We shut the market place off and there must have been a few thousand people who came along.

"I'm not sure if it was the biggest ever attendance because it was such a scorcher in 2012, but I think it was definitely the best for atmosphere.

"We set up a stage and there were local bands playing and a giant funfair. There must have been about 20 market stalls.

"About 100 children dressed up as superheroes and took part in the fancy dress parade."

Among those enjoying the fun were Ellie Keenan, four, and Lily Munday, three, who won balloons.

Ellie said: "The Ferris wheel was the best thing."

Lily added: "I liked the trampolining."

Live music was provided by local groups including Wantage Stage Musical Company.

As well as a hog roast, carnival-goers enjoyed fish and chips and browsed arts, crafts and clothing stalls.

There was also face painting and a fancy dress competition.

The event raises money for a number of charities including Cancer Research UK.

Mr Collins said the Wantage Race for Life was scheduled to take place on the day of the carnival but this will now happen in September, along with a 10km or 20km cycle ride.
