A man has died after his car overturned in Wantage this morning.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene in Chain Hill shortly after 7.30am but the man in his 50s, who was driving a grey Toyota, was declared dead at the roadside.

Officers do not believe any other vehicles were involved.

His next of kin has been informed and police said they believed he is local.

Police closed the road both ways this morning, sparking traffic backlogs through the town centre, but it has since reopened.

The force has appealed for witnesses.

Senior investigating officer Sgt Lyndon Barrett said: "I would like to speak to anyone who saw this collision following which the driver of the vehicle sadly died, or who witnessed the vehicle travelling prior to the collision.

"If anyone has any information which could assist the investigation please speak to police.”

South Central Ambulance Service spokeswoman Michelle Archer said one ambulance and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance were sent to the scene but were unable to save the man.
