A SPECIAL sewing circle celebrated their silver anniversary with a quilted cake.

The King Alfred’s Quilters marked their bumper birthday in March and group member Kathryn Vickers made a cake iced with a quilt pattern of blue and white hexagons to celebrate the occasion.

They also held a bring and buy sale of sewing items, the proceeds of which went to charity.

The quilters started as a small group meeting in member’s houses in 1993 but now have an active membership of 26, meeting in the village hall in East Challow near Wantage.

All the members have an interest in sewing and fabrics but mainly in making quilts.

The quilts are based on a wide variety of traditional patterns and made in three layers which are sewn or quilted together to make attractive wall hangings, comfortable bed covers, throws and decorative bags.

Outings and workshops are a regular feature of the group programme. New members are always welcome and plenty of encouragement is given to anyone who would like to try their hand at the craft.

Anyone interested is invited to join a meeting on the first or third Wednesday of the month at 7.30.
