Vandals attack Wantage allotments

VANDALS damaged fruit and vegetable patches and broke into a shed at a Grove allotment at the weekend.

Six plots were spoilt during the spree at the Grove Road Allotment, with vegetables uprooted and a lawn mower taken from a shed and abandoned.

Chris Singer, who has had a vegetable plot for four years, said the incident had made him feel like giving up.

The 56-year-old, from Churchward Close, said his runner bean canes had been pulled over and some of the vegetables had died.

He said: “If I do give up then the mindless people who has done this will have won.

“All the hard work and effort that we have put into our allotments and then someone damages them. I’m very angry.”

The father-of-two, who works as a technical support engineer, said: “I went up there on Saturday morning and when I returned the following day I noticed the damage.”

Mr Singer said five other people suffered damage: “One man had his shed broken into and his lawn mower taken out. They then ran off with it and pushed in to my vegetables.

“Another man had spent about £150 putting up a wooden fruit cage with netting to protect his goods from pigeons and that has been smashed to pieces.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: “The neighbourhood policing team are aware of this and will be investigating who has done this.

“Anyone who hasn’t reported damage to their allotments should do so on 08458 505505.”
