Tesco unveils plans for supermarket in Faringdon

TESCO has unveiled plans to build a supermarket in Faringdon.

The supermarket giant claims the multi-million pound store, in Park Road, would create 100 new jobs for local people.

An exhibition of the designs will be held next week when people will be asked to give their opinions and staff from the company will be on hand to answer questions.

Following the consultation, Tesco will submit a planning application to Vale of White Horse District Council and hopes the project will be completed by summer 2011.

Corporate affairs manager Felix Gummer, said: “We believe there is a real need for increased food shopping choice in Faringdon.

“Research shows that currently around 80 per cent of local people travel outside the town to do their main food shop. Our new supermarket is designed to encourage them to stay in Faringdon and they can combine this with visits to town centre shops.”

The store would have a retail floorspace of 15,000 sq ft and as well as food, would offer a small amount of non-food items. There would be 137 free car parking spaces, as well as 16 special needs spaces.

Store hours would likely be 8am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

Faringdon mayor Mike Wise said: “It’s a difficult one because the problem with a supermarket is it could suck the life out of Faringdon, but on the other hand we don’t have a store with a car park so it could bring a lot of people into the town.

“The town council hasn’t made a decision on the plans yet.”

The exhibition will take place at the Corn Exchange, Faringdon, on Tuesday, January 12, from 2.30pm to 8pm, and on Wednesda
