Joanna Menzies runs Rambles Pet Care, cat sitting and dog walking in and around Wantage

IT’S great to be back. I grew up in the Oxfordshire countryside, then spent a decade wedged on the tube, shuttling between drab London offices, dreaming about the green of home. So when I quit the city and swapped PR for pet care, it seemed obvious to me. But I’m sure my friends and family thought I was barking mad!

Twelve months on and it’s time for cake and a candle as Rambles Pet Care, my homegrown start-up, celebrates a successful first year. With more than 60 waggy-tailed clients and a team of four other pooch-loving professionals alongside me, I couldn’t be happier.

Work isn’t easier or less tiring, but it’s much more rewarding. I don’t mind the bleary-eyed 6:30am starts to get organised before heading out. Our clients are very busy people, so it’s only natural that we get lots of last-minute changes and pleas for help. So, with a large cup of tea to hand, I begin by planning the day’s schedule for Team Rambles.

By 9:30am I’m lacing up my boots for walkies time. The dogs don’t care what the weather’s like so neither do we, often hiking 8 miles a day come rain, wind or shine. Good dog walkers aren’t just checking out the scenery, though. While I’m out, I take notes about behaviour, interaction – even poop! – and also send cute pics or post social media “pupdates” so that owners know their furry family members are happy and well.

Once the morning walks are done and the worn-out doggies are back home snoozing, I’m ready for a late lunch. The Rambles Pet Care team usually gets a chance to catch up around 2pm, sharing stories and photos from our day while responding to emails and messages. After that, it’s back out for the afternoon session before turning our attention to feline friends; visiting homes to top up food and water and hopefully hear a few satisfied purrs.

From 6pm I head out to greet our lovely new customers. I always meet prospective clients and their four-legged friends face to face before they sign up. It’s so important that whoever’s looking after your pet is the right person for the job and this is the perfect opportunity to ask questions and put minds at ease.

By the end of the day I’m exhausted, muddy and covered in 15 types of fur. But being greeted by one waggy tail after another makes it worth every second.
