No I’m not talking about pedalling that exercise bike at the gym and creating power for the building (wow, what a good idea – listen up all you gym owners out there!)

No, I actually mean the power that each and every one of us has to make change happen.

Having watched the documentary film Tomorrow (Demain – originally a French film) shown at the Corn Exchange on March 14, I was inspired to join with others to make my locality more how I would like it to be.

Now, if you did not get to see the film I thoroughly recommend you do for a really uplifting experience.

Even better, get a group of friends and neighbours together to watch it.

So, last week some of us got together and identified some things we would love to see happening, either in Wallingford or in one of the surrounding villages, to make our environment a more sustainable and pleasant place to live, where people build connections with each other and become more resilient.

So each of us has gone away to find out things or talk to relevant people.

We are meeting again on Monday, April 9, at 7.15pm in the back room of the Dolphin Pub on St. Mary’s Street, Wallingford.

As always we will of course be welcoming new people, so please do come in and join us.

We look forward to seeing you there, and sharing your enthusiasm.

Community action groups like Sustainable Wallingford are growing, as more people realise that real change has to come from grass roots organisations like ours.

Oxfordshire now has about 70 community action groups, the most in any area in Europe.

Well doesn’t that say something? That well-known man who said 'Be the change you want to see' knew a thing or two!

Sustainable Wallingford already has groups of people like us who organise and help at our swap shops and are currently helping to organise our first-ever repair cafe (join us at Centre 70 on Saturday, April 14, from 10am).

Another group of human beings formed a clean air group as they wanted to do things to improve the air quality in Wallingford which is currently very poor – particularly in certain areas of the town.

If you are interested in joining one of these groups, or forming one of your own, you will be very welcome.

Contact us at sustainablewallingford.org, or if you prefer to speak to a human being phone Caron on 01491 825034.

Let’s get people power growing.
