Sir, The Herald two weeks ago reported councillor Melinda Tilley, Oxfordshire cabinet member for education, as “being concerned about the authority’s growing loss of control as more schools become academies”.
She said: “I don’t know what our role will be and nobody seems to know at the moment.” I was surprised to read this, as last May, councillor Tilley was fully supportive of the council’s endorsement of the Government’s drive to encourage schools to become academies. Councillor Tilley was quoted then as saying: “These changes are a much-needed breath of fresh air for Oxfordshire’s education system.” I would be interested to know why councillor Tilley’s views seem to have changed in such a short time.
