Moments after the end of the Spanish Grand Prix, F1 pundit Eddie Jordan described the Williams F1 team as a ‘minnow’ that had made it back to the big time.
Sorry Eddie, but though the Grove team had not won a race for eight years, it has never been a minnow in Formula One.
Winning has been part of the team’s DNA since we started following the team from its earliest days back in 1978 with a staff of 17 in Didcot.
For the record, since then the company has won 114 races, no fewer than 16 FIA Formula One World Championships, nine for constructors, in partnership with Cosworth, Honda and Renault, and seven for drivers, with Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.
The firm now employs about 500 and we are pleased that those Williams employees injured in the pit garage fire that followed the end of the Spanish Grand Prix, appear to be recovering well.
Knowing Frank Williams, there was only one present that he really wanted for his team on his 70th birthday and Venezuelan driver Pastor Maldonado delivered it.
