SIR, The “nightmare” concerning traffic through Long Wittenham (headline, Didcot Herald, November 20) has arrived today (Tuesday, November 26) as the A34 is blocked and some of the diverted traffic has been trying to get through the village, leading to gridlock here and in Clifton Hampden.

This event may be exceptional, but it does demonstrate just how inadequate the roads in this area are at peak times and how something must be done to accommodate the extra traffic which will be generated by the Didcot North housing development.

I wonder if Croudace really do believe their prediction that 1,800 houses will add only 50 extra cars at peak time, or whether they think that the residents of Long Wittenham and other affected villages are all country bumpkins who will accept any rubbish that’s thrown at them.

This is such a ridiculous underestimate and is on the same level of cloud cuckoo land as is the company’s spokesman, Alison Walker, who thinks that a few junction alterations on the northern perimeter road will make it all OK.

The developers simply haven’t considered the effects that this extra housing will have on local communities and, if it has, then it obviously doesn’t care.

Having sat in my car for 45 minutes this morning between Long Wittenham and Clifton Hampden and moved about half a mile, I’ll certainly object to this development.
