SIR, You reported on (December 11) a plea to rename Wantage Civic Hall the John Betjeman Centre.
While I am a Betjeman fan, I cannot support the idea. The Civic Hall has been in existence for almost 40 years. Everybody living in and around Wantage knows it and its functions.
If it should be renamed as suggested, I imagine many people would wonder where it was located and what it was for.
We already have a Betjeman Memorial Park and it has been suggested that a statue of the great man should be erected in the town.
Hugh Chamberlain, Portway Mews, Wantage
