Sir, I have just witnessed the most irresponsible act from a cyclist here in Abingdon. A woman was cycling the wrong way down West St Helen Street, towards the river.
A van approaching from East St Helen Street had to stop suddenly, since the driver had not expected traffic to be approaching from his right.
The cyclist stopped astride her bike, right in front of the van’s grille. The sickening part was that a young child was strapped in a seat on the rear of the bike.
Had it not been for the driver’s quick reactions, this could very easily have been another sad disaster in Abingdon.
If you recognise yourself as the cyclist, please obey the Highway Code, even if it costs a few extra minutes. If you recognise yourself as the driver, well done! Christopher Brogden
