Sir, You recently allowed me to air my views on the quality of pothole repairs within the confines of the town of Abingdon.

Readers may be interested in the view of a county councillor when approached on the subject of what appears to be the poor quality of the repairs.

Quote: Would you rather a very few filled properly, or more (but not enough) filled not so well? Notwithstanding that the poorer quality ones will not last nearly as long.

That’s the reality of the situation — I’m not saying that I like it but that’s where the county’s at. Unquote!

So it would appear that councillors, at least some of them, are happy to tolerate an inadequate standard of repair in order to save money in the short term, while ignoring the long term.

Furthermore, it’s been put to me that pothole repairs cannot be sealed with liquid bitumen as it’s against EU regulations. This is incorrect, EU regulations do not specify any restriction on the use of liquid bitumen but liquid coal tar, an entirely different composition, is banned and has been in the UK since 1999.
