Sir, The Abingdon Community Hospital League of Friends needs help from the citizens of Abingdon. The hospital was in danger of closing some years ago, but the same citizens saved their hospital, which has since developed into an even more useful service for Abingdon and the surrounding areas.

It is not fully financed by Government funding and the League of Friends has raised several thousands of pounds to buy vital medical and surgical equipment, as well as extra comforts for the patients.

A very small band of volunteers has raised funds with events and donations from individuals and other business sources. Most people do not realise the coffee shop, which provides an excellent service run by other volunteers, is non-profit-making and does not add to the funds.

The League of Friends has fewer than 50 members, including the committee, from the whole of Abingdon and District. To become a Friend only costs one annual fee of £5. If only one person in every household could contribute, there would be ample funds to buy necessary equipment.

The League of Friends almost collapsed a few years ago due to the age and health of the committee members, but rallied with some help from new volunteers.

Regrettably the situation is critical once again for the same reasons — age and health — and the committee has dwindled to an unacceptable level.

We desperately need new blood, and, if possible, a few younger members; some of the few we have left are in their late 70s and early 80s. We have a website and an email — achlof1@gmail.com — or contact can be made with me, the current chairman.
