Sir, I write in wholehearted support of the sentiments expressed by Terry Randall (Letters, January 21).
As a member of Wantage Rotary Club, I have had the privilege of working alongside the four 50-year Rotarians, and am in awe of what they have contributed to our community.
It should, perhaps, be pointed out that these exemplary gentlemen are merely the longest serving members of the Wantage club. There are many others who have been, and are still, contributing to the good work which Rotary does.
In the 52 years since the club was founded, something in the region of one million pounds has been raised through fundraising activities as diverse as silent auctions, race nights, metal detecting events, golf days, and so on, and all of this money has been used to support worthy causes.
This philanthropic work is carried out on an unstinting, and entirely voluntary, basis, and that is why I agree with Mr.Randall that these are the type of people who should be receiving recognition through the awards system.
Our community should be truly proud of such noble citizens.
Bill Roycroft
President
Wantage Rotary Club
