Sir, It would be a desperate shame if Abingdon’s outdoor pool were to be closed and replaced by a restaurant, of which there are any number in the town and more proposed at the Old Gaol complex, also by the river.
The outdoor pool is a valuable asset for Abingdon, especially in view of its expanding population. Outdoor swimming is regaining its popularity and, without the pool, many youngsters would be tempted to swim in the river on hot summer days. Once demolished, it would be lost for ever and one of Abingdon’s unique attractions would be gone.
I also have concerns that scenarios B and C, with the creation of a restaurant and/or a large games area, gym equipment and hard paths would have the effect of urbanising the area and spoiling the tranquil and rural nature of Abbey Meadows. I urge all those who value our unique pool and wish to retain the rural character of the Meadows and avoid its overdevelopment to vote for scenario A – “a place to swim and play”.
