Sir, With the district council elections coming up it is of interest to know who will really save our outdoor pool. Following the Abbey Meadows consultation, my understanding is that most people voted to save the pool.
From each of the candidates, we need to know who would ensure the earmarked money is spent on the refurbishment of the pool such as relining and improving the heating.
This would guarantee its long-term survival and development as a community asset. This needs to be done in writing in a public medium such as the Herald, for example.
I note that some of the candidates were the ones who tried to close the pool permanently in 2005. This includes Liberal Democrat (LD) Tony DeVere, who was the deputy leader of the district Council at the time, and told me numerous times that the pool should close.
In 2005, LD Neil Fawcett, replied to my letter saying the pool had to close and his LD partner Samantha Bowring also agreed with this verbally, subsequently. However, in recent years, councillor Bowring has been more supportive of the pool.
We need to know from all the candidates, from all the parties, who will really save our outdoor pool.
