Sir, My cousin, who lives in Goring, sent me this picture from the Herald (March 25, 2015).
I was very thrilled to receive it as it shows my late mother, Ella Frewin, planting the red oak to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Wallingford WI. She was a very keen member for many years and was very sad when it closed. I think it has since reopened.
I can remember going from the girls' school up Church Lane to the Town Hall to meet from the afternoon meetings. Many of the faces look familiar but I can't remember names.
The one name I do recall is the person standing next to the gentlemen, to the right of the tree. I knew her as Joan Rhodes. She was a friend at the girls' school who lives at Severalls Farm outside Wallingford.
We went to grammar school together and then she moved away. I think she came back to Wallingford when she married (I don't know her married name) and met up with my mum again.
I have a lot of happy memories of Wallingford. There always seemed to be so many activities to do – Girl Guides, Sea Rangers, Tennis Club, St Leonard's Youth Club, School Hockey and Netball Club. I don't think we had time to get into mischief!
My father was Ray Frewin who was an engine driver and when the "bunk" closed down, he drove the last train from Wallingford to Cholsey and back.
