Sir, A Didcot Conservative councillor (Letters, May 27) appears to be reviving a scheme to make Cow Lane tunnel two-way, between Hitchcock Way and Ladygrove.

Four years ago, Oxfordshire County Council highways officers advised against such a scheme because of the right-angled turn into the tunnel.

They advised that one inner lane on Hitchcock Way and Station Road would be needed for that turn, reducing straight over capacity and timing.

They modelled that it would back up traffic at the Station and along Hitchcock Way. It would also create a hazard on the Ladygrove side of Cow Lane as vehicles would remain stationary for a longer period, requiring pedestrians and cyclists to cross through traffic waiting for the lights to change.

If there is a new scheme that works, I am certain Labour members will support it and we look forward to seeing the plans and taking a constructive part in consultation.
