Sir – The article on the possible demolition of the Regal Centre, Wallingford (July 8), featuring Wallingford in Business ‘spokeswoman’ Mrs Elaine Hornsby, is little else than a repeat of a familiar diatribe she has expounded in the past, claiming that demolition of the stated area and subsequent ‘redevelopment’ would enhance her business turnover.

No mention is made of any thought as to how such a move might benefit Wallingford as a whole.

The article seems to read a lot of ‘I’, ‘me’ and ‘my’.

And as for councillor Cotton’s input, we believe he has made it plain in the recent past that his claimed interest in Wallingford’s future wellbeing and success is without foundation or substance.

This is, of course, our considered opinion regarding the matter, but we feel that it places the article in a more realistic perspective.

Yes, this part of the town does need to receive sensible, professional attention in an effort to improve it, but not based on the contents of this article.

As a matter of interest, the Regal Centre is currently used by a number of organisations for a number of sports, social activities, and marketing, together with providing facilities connected with other activities that take place elsewhere in the town throughout the year.

Granted, the centre may be in need of attention, but John Cotton’s latest uttering of the word ‘redevelopment’ of the Regal Centre would be suicidal.
