Sir – The publicised threat of closures of recycling centres supposedly on the grounds of costs is crass stupidity, if indeed the closures materialise.
Furthermore, it is short-sighted, because fly-tipping, which is already costing councils millions across the country, will only increase. Ironically councillors justify their huge expense hike. I am going to be really cynical and suggest that if scrutiny of how much council decisions /actions (or lack of action) over the years have cost the taxpayer, then I am confident that we would not be having the cuts that we now are.
Recycling centres are well utilised and provide a vital community service. To close such facilities will cost more financially, environmentally and will be short-sighted.
As I say, scrutiny should take place within local authorities and answers to why cuts are supposedly now needed will be there.
