Sir – We are told the 139 Wallingford to Henley Bus which goes through Benson to RAF Benson via Ewelme etc to Henley, is to be axed.

1. There are many pensioners who are disabled and unable to drive who are completely dependent on this route 2. There are also those who cannot afford to have cars 3. There are mothers with young children at RAF Benson also in the same position when their husbands are away from the base.

We need for medical reasons alone to be able to access Wallingford hospital and the opticians etc. Also to purchase various items from chemists and fresh food too.

My husband can hardly walk and nor can I with torn knee cartilages which cannot be mended. How does Oxfordshire County Council expect us to survive? We have lived between Ewelme and Benson since 1967 paying our rates in the G band. and note that there are many officers in the county council now earning seven-figure sums.

Some of us have no alternative but to depend on public transport.

In conclusion, I once worked in the education department at the county council and for South Oxfordshire District Council and at the moment am feeling very anarchic as all those making these decisions are not in the medical nor financial situations we find ourselves in.

It’s a case of “I’m all right, Jack, and damn you”. Ironic too as my husband’s ancestors were once Mayors of Oxford. Three of them.
