Sir – May I commend the letter from Brian Eastoe (October 28), in which he comments on the state of the precinct in Abingdon, to the councillors responsible for the precinct.

I am sure the majority of residents in Abingdon would agree with his view that the precinct is “dead”. Surely it is not beyond the wit of the councillors involved to construct a method of “encouragement” for traders to set up shop and thereby “footfall”.

A cinema would be a wonderful addition to the town centre, as would a “food store”. No more “caféseateries” needed, surely. It would seem that the council’s policies actively discourage traders setting up shop. The council seems very good at “house building”, but very poor at improving the infrastructure for the residents.

I am aware there is a shortage of money but surely this would be an “investment” for the town’s future?
