Sir – In the Herald (October 21) you reported an interview with Professor Andrew Harrison, chief executive of the Diamond Light Source.

He expressed concern that cuts in Government science funding could cause scientific activity to move overseas.

He said more investment is needed at the Harwell Science Campus. The report went on to mention the potential expansion of work at the Diamond Light Source that might be threatened by cuts.

In fact, cuts might be a good idea. It is not sensible to keep pumping the UK taxpayer’s money into areas like Oxfordshire, aggravating the problem of high house prices.

Science is international and does not have to be carried out in the UK. Such money as is spent here should be used to maintain (and if possible improve) essential local services.
