Sir, I doubt if Timothy Oates is correct to suggest that a speed camera and police speed check which he saw at East Hendred were just there to raise money.

Speed monitoring like he has described is a very inefficient form of taxation. The revenue is very expensive to collect and extremely easy to avoid.

Excessive speed does, however, have consequences, and not just sometimes contributing to accidents. Fast-moving heavy traffic can result in children being driven to school, rather than walking or cycling. The elderly and the infirm may feel trapped in their homes.

These are among the commonest issues which local people raise with their parish councillors.

Please don’t treat lightly the efforts by the county council and the police to deal with the difficult issue of speeding.
